The way we connect with people has changed thanks to technology and social media.

There are now a lot more things to think about when you are communicating with people. It’s different to standing in front of someone and talking to them.

Here are a few helpful hints to keeping your relationships healthy.

Proof Read!

It’s always a good idea to read what you have written before you post it online or send it to a friend. Is it clear what you are saying in the message? If you are being funny, is it clear that it is a joke?

If the answer to either of these is ‘no’ or you aren’t sure, it could lead to someone taking something the wrong way.

And always make sure there are no mistakes that might be embarrassing!

Respond Don’t React

People share their opinions on social media all the time. And you may not agree with them.

But before you go replying to them, stop and take a breath. Re-read what they have said and think about what you want to say. Don’t let your emotions lead what you reply. You might just end up in an argument, the last thing that you want.

Don’t Just Keep It Online

Leaving a quick message or posting something is a great way to let people know that you are thinking of them. Even better is to give them a call or go and meet them in person. It isn’t always possible if you have family or friends that live abroad, but they’d love to see you on a videocall.

Try to have a mix of keeping up with people in the real world and online, and you’ll get the best from the relationships you have.
